Background of the Study:
Traditional sports in Epe Local Government serve as more than mere recreational activities; they are pivotal in fostering social cohesion and reinforcing community identity. These sports, which include indigenous games and competitions, provide platforms for intergenerational interaction, cultural expression, and community bonding (Ogunyemi, 2023). Historically, traditional sports have been instrumental in teaching values such as teamwork, discipline, and respect while also serving as a medium for conflict resolution and social integration (Femi, 2024). However, with the rise of modern sports and digital entertainment, the prominence of these indigenous games faces decline. Community leaders and cultural custodians argue that revitalizing traditional sports could strengthen community ties and promote cultural pride. This study examines how traditional sports contribute to social cohesion in Epe, exploring their potential to unite diverse community members while preserving cultural heritage (Balogun, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
The growing popularity of modern sports and digital media has overshadowed traditional sports in Epe, leading to diminished community participation and weakening social bonds. This decline threatens the role of traditional games in promoting social cohesion and preserving cultural identity. The study investigates these trends and challenges (Ogunyemi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of traditional sports in fostering social cohesion.
To identify factors contributing to the decline of traditional sports.
To recommend strategies for revitalizing indigenous sports in the community.
Research Questions:
How do traditional sports contribute to social cohesion in Epe?
What factors have led to the decline in traditional sports participation?
What measures can reinvigorate traditional sports and enhance community bonding?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional sports play a significant role in fostering social cohesion.
The decline in traditional sports participation negatively impacts community unity.
Revitalization initiatives can restore the social functions of traditional sports.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant in highlighting the role of traditional sports in building community cohesion. Its findings will aid cultural policymakers and community leaders in developing programs that promote indigenous sports and preserve cultural heritage (Ogunyemi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Epe Local Government, Lagos State, focusing exclusively on the impact of traditional sports on social cohesion. Limitations include reliance on community self-reports and limited quantitative data.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Sports: Indigenous games and recreational activities practiced within a community.
